This short course is aimed at teachers who would like to look at strategies for helping students choose and develop the content of their topic and look at ways of helping their students perform better in the Topic Phase of their exam.

The overall aims are:
- to consider ways of getting students to effectively brainstorm topic ideas for a formal oral presentation that is discursive in nature
- to encourage learners to structure their presentation in a way that helps the examiner to notice and remember significant points
- to consider how students can anticipate the contributions of the examiner and think of ways of expanding and developing the topic beyond the limitations of the formal presentation
- to examine ways in which we can encourage our students to take full responsibility for the discussion
